Just a groove

Pomegranate Funk started as a cool bass line I didn’t want to forget. It became a groovy new video on YouTube.

These video shorts are a songwriting exercise. I’m always writing something, whether I like it or not. So, I create little experiments to reap the benefits of an active inner-monologue.

The title was likely inspired by my studio lighting

A pomegranate by any other name

This short, like those before it, began with no plan.

I opened a new project in Protools and titled it pomegranate, the first word that popped into my head. I didn’t know where the music would take us from there.

Later, upon hearing the finished product, Sarah said the song was too funky for its title. With that critique, Pomegranate Funk was born.

All about that bass

In the video below I can be seen and heard writing the bass line. The clip is a great example of my creative process, which involves detailed conversations between myself, the furniture, and possibly the dog.

The boys in the band

Once we had the bass, the rest fell into place. Here’s me laying down some smooth Fender blues. I’m playing with headphones, so all you hear is the guitar without accompaniment. Warts and all. :)

Beat maker

You’ll see me play a lot of live percussion in these videos. Every song will have some combination of congas, bongos, tambourine, cowbell, udu, shaker, etc.

But you will rarely see me play a traditional drum kit. That is because drums are a pain in the ass to record, and they take up a lot of space. So, whenever I want a traditional kick, snare, and high-hat beat, I play it on MIDI pads.

I almost always play beats live. I only use loops when I am intentionally invoking that sound, like my recent single “Haiku Logic”, on which I wanted that boom-bap beat. Most of the time, I play the pads as a drummer plays a kit. Sometimes I use sticks!
